The Annals Of Unsolved Crimes

The Mayerling Deaths:

Four Theories

June 9, 2010

by Edward Jay Epstein

The theories of the case include:

1.The Double Suicide Theory. According to this theory, which has become the official version of the incident, the Baroness Versera committed suicide, Prince Rudolf, waited several hours with her body, then fatally shot himself.

2. The Murder plus Suicide Theory. Prince Rudolf killed the Baroness, possibly with a blow to the head, and then, unable to deal with the consequences of his crime, shot himself.

3. The Accident plus Suicide Theory. Dr. Gerd Holler in his (1980) book "Mayerling: Die Losung des Ratsels," after finding no bullet wound in his emanation, and no evidence a second bullet was fired, advances the theory that the Baroness died by accident, possible the result of an abortion, and the Prince shot himself.

4. The Double Murder Theory. The Empress Zita (1892 - 1989), the widow of the last Emperor, Reportedly suggested the theory that the Crown Prince Rupert and his mistress was murdered, and the crime was disguised as a double suicide, without providing any evidence, other than that the emperor told her the secret was sealed away.
