| Theories
that have been advanced in this case include:
1.The Loner Theory. A deranged person, whether
it was Christer Pettersson or another loner, seeing Palme
on the street without any security, shot him and disposed
of the weapon.
2.
The Kurdish Theory. Swedish
police received a tip that the Kurdish organization called
"PKK" organized the assassination. A number of
Kurds residing in Sweden were arrested but released for
lack of evidence. In 2001, after the Kurdish leader
Abdullah Acalan was captured in Turkey, Swedish police investigators
questioned him in prison but he denied any Kurdish involvrment.er
2008
3.
The South African Connection Theory. In 1996, Eugene
de Kock, a former South African police officer, alleged
to the Supreme Court in Pretoria that Palme was supporting
the outlawed ANC. He testified that Craig Williamson, a
former police colleague, organized the plot. The triggerman
was identified as a member of an assassination squad known
as Operation Longreach. Swedish police were unable to to
substantiate de Kock's claims.
4.
The Terrorist Theory. the Baader-Meinhof Group
of Germany claimed responsibility for the assassination
of Palme via an anonymous phone call. They supposedly
blamed him for the bloodshed at the West German embassy
siege in Stockholm in 1975.
