Pentagon
Not Seeking Iraq Bases
On April
21st, 2003 Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said
the New York Times report, supposedly based on anonymous
"senior administration officials," that the
Pentagon was seeking long-term bases in Iraq, was completely
untrue.
" I would say that article takes the award for
world-class thumb sucker of this year," Rumsfeld
added at a press briefing with General Richard Myers
. "To my knowledge I don't know what senior is,
but I can tell you [General Myers] wasn't asked, I wasn't
asked, Torie [Clark] wasn't asked, Pace wasn't asked,
and there have been zero discussions among senior Bush
administration officials. We literally have not even
considered that."
