The Annals Of Unsolved Crimes

The Fiery Death of Dag Hammarskjold

Four Theories

June 16, 2010

by Edward Jay Epstein

Theories that have been advanced  in this case include:

1. The Accident Theory.  The pilot misjudged the distance to the airport.

2. The Sabotage Theory.  Some party opposed to Hammarskjold's efforts to end the secession of Katanga planted an explosive device on the plane that was triggered by the landing gear.

3. The Hijacking Theory. Someone aboard the plane attempted to hijack it, a gunfight broke out, and the plane crashed.   This scenario would account for the guards' bullet wounds.

4. The Interception Theory. A plane shot down Hammarskjold's plane as it prepared to land and Rhodesia covered up the interception.
