Three Theories

Theories that have been advanced  in this case include:

1. The Lone Communist Theory. The Dutch Communist Van der Lubbe set the fire on his own with the support of any group.

2. The Agent Provocateur Theory.  According to the defense theory, the Nazis manipulated Van der Lubbe to set the fire so that they could blame the Communists and seize power.

3.The Comintern Plot Theory.  According to the theory of the prosecution,  Stalin, and his Comintern in Moscow, used Van der Lubbe (and others) to create chaos in Germany.
