The Annals Of Unsolved Crimes

The "Suicide" of Marilyn Monroe

The Four Theories

June 9, 2010

by Edward Jay Epstein

Theories that have been advanced  in this case include:

1. Suicide Theory.  Marilyn Monroe, despondent over setback in her career and/or romantic life, took a massive overdose of pills.

2. Accident Theory. According to a theory advanced on Court TV, Monroe's psychiatrist and internist, acting without knowledge of each other's medical interventions, gave her a combination of drugs that led to her death.    In this unsubstantiated scenario, her psychiatrist was unaware that her doctor had given her the barbiturate Nembutal, and have her a chloral hydrate enema to help her sleep. The interaction of the Nembutal and chloral hydrate then proved lethal.
3.Induced Suicide Theory.  Marilyn Monroe was encouraged to carry out her threat of suicide to prevent her from revealing embarrassing information about relations with members of the Kennedy family.

4. Murder Theory.  Monroe was murdered to silence her and all the evidence of the crime was then erased to make it appear to be a suicide.
