| Theories
that have been advanced in this case include:
1. The Putin Theory. Putin's inner sanctum
arranged for Litvinenko to be exposed to radioactive Polonium
to exact vengeance for his defection.
2.
The Smuggling Theory. A sample of polonium
210, a component in early stage nuclear bombs, was used
to facilitate a deal in London involving Litvinenko, and
he was exposed to it.
3.
The Red Mafia Theory. Litvinenko (and his associate
Mario Scaramella) were attempting to expose a Ukrainian
leader of the so-called Red Mafia, who was engaged in smuggling
nuclear materials. In the course of these machinations,
Litvinenko (and Scaramella) were exposed to the radioactive
isotope.
