The Annals Of Unsolved Crimes

The Elimination of Lin Biao

Three Theories

June 26, 2010

by Edward Jay Epstein

Theories that have been advanced  in this case include:

1. The Pilot Error Theory.  The pilot crashed the plane by accident or. according to Chinese version, ran out of fuel.

2. The Sabotage Theory.  Lin Biao was encouraged to leave China with his wife, son, and military aides. but his aircraft was sabotaged or a bomb was planted aboard it.  This theory would explain why not effort was made to intercept his flight.

3. The Staged Crash Theory.  According to Stanislav Lunev, formerly an intelligence officer on the Russian General Staff, Lin Biao' had been killed long before the plane took off, and the crash was staged to make him appear to be a traitor.

The drawback to this theory is that Mao purged and killed thousands of party official without needing to stage an accident.
