| Theories
that have been advanced in this case include:
1. The Domestic Violence Theory. As is common
in cases in which a suspicious death occurs in a household,
the policy initially suspected that one of the Ramsey family
members-- either her father John or brother Burke-- was
responsible, and his mother Patsy may have written the ransom
note in an effort to cover up the crime. However,
the police was unable to find any evidence to support this
theory other than the possibility that Patsy Ramsey may
have altered her handwriting to avoid it being matched to
the note. Eventually, the prosecution abandoned this
theory.
2.
The Bad Neighbor Theory. According to this theory, someone
who knew the layout of the Ramsey house-- possibly a neighbor,
business associate, or relative-- murdered JonBenet as an
act of revenge or anger against her parents and wrote the
ransom note to divert police attention.
3.The Sexual Predator Theory. Because JonBenet
appeared in beauty pageants, a sexual predator broke in
the house, assaulted JonBenet, and left the note to divert
attention. (The police investigated all the known sexual
offenders in the area but could not find any matches with
the clues.)
4.
The Kidnapper Theory.
In this theory, someone broke into the house with the intention
of holding JonBenet for ransom. He then wrote the
long note on the kitchen table(having failed to prepare
it in advance). He then carried JonBenet to the basement,
assaulted her, accidentally killed her, left her body in
the wine room, and escaped through basement window. The
police, not thoroughly investigating the crime scene, missed
clues to his identity.
