| Theories
that have been advanced in this case include:
1. The Mafia Theory. A 56-page report the
FBI prepared for a January 1976 briefing says it is probable
that Hoffa was murdered by organized crime figures to prevent
him from regaining control over the union's pension fund.
2.
The Provenzano Theory. In the power
struggle for the Teamsters, Hoffa was a problem for Provenzano,
and previous of his problems had somehow disappeared. In
1972 a man allegedly involved in counterfeiting money with
Provenzano also disappeared. So did Tony Castellito,
the treasurer of Provenzano's Local.
3.
The Family Murder Theory. Even though Hoffa had adopted
Charles O'Brien when he was seven years old, a number of
witnesses told the FBI that there had been friction between
O'Brien
and Hoffa, when O'Brien opposed his efforts to run again
for Teamster office in 1975. There was evidence connecting
him to Hoffa-- a hair in his car.
Drawback:
O'Brien had an alibi. He was at the home of a a Teamster
official cutting a 40-pound frozen salmon into steaks.
